A hotel with history. Modernized but preserving the essence and culture of the place.
Up until 2005, the main building of the Hotel "Creu de Tau" Art & Spa housed the former convent of the Franciscan nuns of the "Daughters of Mercy" congregation. The plot was ceded by Mr. D. Gabriel Artigues Gomila in 1888, where the main building was built and inaugurated on February 8, 1891. This was the social and educational headquarters of the nuns until 2005, the year of their retirement. Within its walls are the various classrooms through which many young people from the municipality have passed in their primary school training.
The convent also has the chapel for the worship of the nuns themselves as well as their cells for their rest. In the chapel you can find the altarpiece and the image in honor of St. Josep that was consecrated in 1927. The work of the nuns, in addition to education, among others, extended to medical assistance, teaching and sewing, as well as education and theatrical and choral performances. In annex to this building there is another one that is older. This one was property of the Diocese of Mallorca, who has donated the building called Parish Center.
This building was used as a theater hall, and later as a social meeting room and rehearsal room for different cultural groups, such as folklore and typical dances of Mallorca. In the gardens of the convent you can see the magnitude of the "talayot", a Bronze Age megalith called "Es Claper", which has the peculiarity of being one of the tallest megaliths in Mallorca, since on one of its sides it reaches six meters in height.
The project of the Hotel "Creu de Tau" was born (as a family project) with the new possibility and intention of the Municipality of Capdepera to create a new brand and destination for inland tourism, in the urban area of Capdepera. Thus, the project has a total area of 10,555 m2, of which more than 7,000 m2 are devoted to gardens and spaces for relaxation. The garden terraces have been reconstructed in their original form, creating ideal green spaces that invite rest and relaxation.
A unique place to exhibit renowned sculptures and part of traveling contemporary art collections. As it is a historical building with a high sentimental value for the people of Capdepera, the soul of the building has been preserved and the annexed buildings have been extended in the same style. The result is a monastic character to the whole construction. Materials of Mallorcan origin have been used in their entirety, such as stone and sandstone, and the history of the building has been maintained.
